US: Ex-Apple engineer charged with stealing self-driving car technology for China

Her former software engineer Apple was accused of stealing technology on behalf of Chinese car company.

According to the Department of Justice, Yebao Wang worked as a software engineer at Apple from 2016 to 2018. Wang had access to databases that only 2,700 of Apple’s 135,000 employees had access to, according to the Justice Department.

Four months before he quit his job at Apple, Wang took a job at the US subsidiary of an unnamed Chinese company developing self-driving technology.

On June 27, 2018, prosecutors raided his home in California, where they found evidence according to the indictment.

Wang managed to escape the country when he boarded a flight bound for Guangzhou, China from San Francisco International Airport. At a press conference, U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of California, Ishmael Ramsey, said Wang was in China. If Chinese authorities extradite him to the US, he faces up to ten years in prison on each charge.

The charges against Wang came after another Apple employee pleaded guilty in San Jose federal court to similarly stealing trade secrets from Apple’s automotive division.

Another employee of Chinese origin also faced federal charges of stealing confidential information in 2019.
