A day ago, the Russian military said it had shot down a Storm Shadow missile after it said over the weekend that Ukraine had used the weapon in an attack on the city of Luhansk, the capital of the Luhansk region in eastern Ukraine.

“This attack used surface-to-surface Storm Shadow missiles supplied to the Kyiv regime by Great Britain, contrary to London’s statements that these weapons would not be used against civilian targets,” the Russian Ministry of Defense said on Saturday.

Last Thursday, Great Britain confirmed that it had supplied such missiles to Ukraine after information about it first appeared in the media.

What Storm Shadow missiles did the Ukrainians receive from Great Britain

Britain is donating Storm Shadow cruise missiles to Ukraine to help it defend its sovereign territory against Russian forces, Britain’s defense minister said.

“We simply will not sit idly by while Russia kills civilians. Russia must admit that only its actions led to the provision of such systems to Ukraine,” Wallace said in parliament.

The Storm Shadow is a long-range, stealth-capable cruise missile jointly developed by the UK and France that is normally air-launched. It has a range of more than 250 km, which is slightly less than the 300 km of the US military’s land-based tactical missile systems (ATACMS), which Ukraine has long demanded.

Storm Shadow has the range necessary to strike Russian-controlled territories in eastern Ukraine.

A Western official told CNN that Britain had received assurances from the Ukrainian government that the missiles would only be used to attack Ukrainian sovereign territory and not inside Russia.
