Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree that simplifies the process of obtaining Russian citizenship for foreign citizens who have signed a contract for military service in the Russian Armed Forces, News.ro reports with reference to CNN.
Those who signed “for a period of one year” can apply for citizenship under a simplified procedure, the decree says.
The new document amends an earlier decree issued by Putin last September that required foreigners to serve at least one year and be active in combat for at least six months to qualify for a simplified citizenship process.
Now the new version of the decree does not provide for direct participation in hostilities.
The updated rules also extend the right to receive simplified citizenship to family members of military personnel.
