Ukrainian forces have retaken at least a kilometer of territory in Bakhmut amid a Russian withdrawal that reflects its “acute shortage of reliable combat units”, British military intelligence said in an assessment on Saturday.

The British Ministry of Defense said that over the past four days, units of Russia’s 72nd Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade may have moved “in disarray” from their positions on the southern flank of Operation Bakhmut.

The area was tactically important as it was a Russian bridgehead on the western side of the Donetsk-Donbas Canal, which marked the front line through parts of the area, the UK Ministry of Defense said in a report.

The 72nd Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade is part of Russia’s 3rd Army Corps, a formation created in the fall of 2023 with low morale and limited combat capability.

The deployment of the brigade in such a complex and operationally important sector underlines the serious shortage of combat-ready units in Russia.
