US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan met with senior Chinese diplomat Wang Yi this week and they pledged to keep lines of communication between Washington and Beijing open, the White House said today.
Jake Sullivan and Wang Yi met yesterday and today in Vienna and discussed, among other things, Russia’s war in Ukraine, the White House said in a statement.
“The two sides have had frank, meaningful, and constructive discussions on important issues in the US-China bilateral relationship, global and regional security issues, Russia’s war against Ukraine, and the Taiwan Strait issues,” the US side said, describing the meetings as “part of ongoing efforts, aimed at maintaining open lines of communication and responsibly managing competition.”
“The two sides have agreed to maintain this important strategic channel of communication to achieve these goals,” the White House said, adding that the talks followed up on a meeting held by US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Indonesia last November. .
