At least one protester has been killed in riots that broke out in several parts of Pakistan today following the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan as he arrived at the Islamabad High Court to stand trial on corruption charges.
Khan was arrested a day after he was criticized by powerful military nations for repeatedly accusing a senior military officer of plotting to kill him, with the army chief responsible for his dismissal a year ago.
Authorities in three of Pakistan’s four provinces have banned all rallies after Khan’s supporters clashed with police, blocked major roads in several cities and stormed military installations in Lahore and Rawalpindi, according to eyewitnesses and video footage released to the public by the former prime minister’s party.
At least one protester was killed and 12 others, including six police officers, were injured in the city of Quetta, local interior minister Ziaulla Langov said.
Pakistan Telecommunications Regulatory Authority said mobile communications are being temporarily suspended by order of the Ministry of Home Affairs. Netblocks, a cybersecurity and internet surveillance service, said that access to Twitter, Facebook and YouTube has been restricted.
According to Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah, Khan was arrested by the National Accountability Agency (NAB) after he ignored a deadline given to him to turn himself in. The minister claimed that Khan and his wife received, when he was still prime minister, a piece of land worth 7 billion rupees (about 25 million euros) from a real estate agent accused in the UK of money laundering. In the case, British authorities returned £190 million (about €250 million) to Pakistan, but Khan returned the money to the real estate agent rather than leaving it in the public treasury, he said.
The ex-premier denies the allegations.
GEO TV channel reported that Khan will appear in court on corruption charges tomorrow.
