Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said today that Russian forces failed to capture the city of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine before May 9, marking the victory of the Soviet Union over Nazi Germany in World War II.
A Ukrainian general said Sunday that Russia still hopes to capture Bakhmut before today’s “Victory Day” events, while a military spokesman said today that fighting in the area continues.
Russian forces are continuing their offensive against the city of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine, the Ukrainian military said, noting that they missed the May 9 deadline for capturing it, which is Russia’s Victory Day.
A Ukrainian general said on Sunday that Russian troops had hoped to capture Bakhmut before today’s holiday in Russia commemorating the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany in World War II.
“The enemy did not take Bakhmut,” Serhiy Serevaty, a spokesman for the eastern command of the Ukrainian forces, told Reuters by phone. “There are no significant changes in positions,” he added.
The Ukrainian military is preparing a widely anticipated counteroffensive to try to retake Russian-held areas in southern and eastern Ukraine.
Russian and Ukrainian troops have been fighting for control of Bakhmut for months.
