
It started early in the morning transport of immigrants and refugees staying in the closed residence center of Lampedusain other areas of Italy.
At this stage, the center of residence of this small island south of Sicily is home to more than 1,700 people, while its capacity usually does not exceed 400 people.
Valerio Valenti, Commissioner for the Management of Immigrants, took over the coordination of all efforts. His plan calls for the use of boats from the Italian navy, coast guard and economic police to transport migrants and refugees to a number of detention centers located on the Italian peninsula.
