“Anti-volunteer” movement that wants to sabotage the Paris Olympics

At the same time, the organizing committee Olympic Games Paris welcomed the “intense enthusiasm” in volunteer applications, some have other plans.

A retired and free-timer, Bernard Gauvin wants to volunteer for the 2024 Olympics, but not in the way we have in mind. His intention is to register as a volunteer but never show up. The 68-year-old man is a member of an informal group that calls itself the “anti-volunteers”.

Considering that the president Macron caused a months-long storm of protests against pension reform, the participants of the “anti-volunteers” plan to disrupt the Games in every possible way: from unfolding banners inside stadiums, sabotaging equipment and infrastructure, to non-working athletes. On social media, the group indicates that those involved in volunteering should be paid for their work.

But in addition to those who are reacting to Macron’s reforms, there are also environmental activists who are reacting to the organization of the Olympic Games. The 25-year-old French activist believes that their organization will burden the environment and work for the benefit of big business and the elite, not local residents.

For their part, the organizers of the Olympic Games have argued that they will carefully select potential volunteers based on various criteria, such as giving priority to those with experience. The organizers of the 2024 Olympics are trying to gather 45,000 volunteers, pointing out that volunteering is an opportunity for all citizens to participate.

Yet nearly three in four French people say they are unhappy with Emmanuel Macron, mostly because of the pension reform, according to a survey conducted by the Ifop Institute for the Journal du Dimanche newspaper.

According to this survey, only 26% of respondents answered that they were satisfied with the president of the country. This percentage is down two points from the previous month, but it is not the lowest figure to date. Macron’s popularity plummeted to 23% in December 2018, at the height of the yellow vest crisis.
