A student who was injured yesterday when a 13-year-old boy attacked his school Belgradehospitalized today in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the head, said the director of a children’s clinic in the capital Serbia.

Police said the 13-year-old turned himself in yesterday, killing eight students and their school security guard.

“A girl who was urgently operated on yesterday for a traumatic brain injury … remains in serious condition in intensive care. Doctors are doing everything possible to save her life, but her general condition is serious,” Sinisa Ducic, acting director of the Tirsova Hospital, told reporters.

Massacres are rare in Serbia, and this is the first armed attack on a school in the Balkan country.

As a result of the attack, a teacher and six students were injured; they are being treated at the Tyrsov hospital and the city’s university polyclinic.

Two boys are in stable condition.

The two boys injured in the attack have been admitted to Tirsov Hospital in stable condition and are expected to be discharged in the coming days, Ducic said.

“They were visited by their parents, a psychologist too, they are on the phone with their parents,” he said.

The suspect used two pistols that belonged to his father, police said yesterday.

A security guard and three female students were shot dead in the hallway.

Then, according to police, the alleged assailant shot and killed the teacher and students in the history class room.

Three days of national mourning will be observed in the country from tomorrow Friday.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said yesterday that the 13-year-old would be transferred to a psychiatric clinic.

Vučić added that the boy’s mother and father have been arrested.
