On Saturday (April 29), a group of 150 forestry workers caught an elephant after taking five tranquilizer shots, the Indian Express reported. Then they put a GPS collar on him and took him to a wildlife sanctuary.
This was not the first time officials have attempted to capture the elephant, believed to be around 30 years old.
In 2017, Arikomban was poisoned with tranquilizers, but managed to escape.
Environmentalists blame the rapid expansion of human settlements around forests and key wildlife corridors for the rise in human-animal conflicts in parts of India.
According to the latest 2017 census, there are about 30,000 wild elephants in India – about 60% of the Asian continent.
