FBI: There are more Chinese hackers than cybersecurity officers by a ratio of 50 to 1

There are more U.S. cyber personnel than Chinese hackers, FBI Director Christopher Wray said at a congressional hearing calling for more funding for the agency.

“By comparison, if each of the FBI intelligence analysts focused exclusively on the Chinese threat, the Chinese hackers would still be outnumbered by at least 50 to 1,” Ray said at a budget hearing before the House Appropriations Subcommittee. Congress Thursday.

Ray added that China “has the largest cyberattack program of any major country and has stolen more of our personal and corporate data than all other countries, large or small, combined.”

At the same time, the head of the FBI argued that countries such as Russia, Iran and North Korea, in addition to non-state criminals, also cause serious problems in the field of cybersecurity. The FBI is currently investigating more than 100 “ransomware variants” with “dozens of victims” for each, the report said.

Finally, the FBI is asking for about $63 million to be able to bolster its cybersecurity staff with 192 new positions. Ray said the raise would also help the FBI send more specialized staff to local offices to be “closer to where cybercrime victims are actually located.”
