“We managed to bring home 44 of our people. Among them are 36 soldiers and sergeants and 6 officers,” Andriy Yermak, the head of the president’s office in Kyiv, said on Twitter on Wednesday. “These are soldiers, border guards, national guardsmen, and sailors.”

Yermak added that two civilians were among those released.

Instead, Moscow said that 40 prisoners of war, who were released by Ukraine, are in “mortal danger”, according to the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation.

The released Russian servicemen will be taken to Moscow for “treatment and recovery”, the department added.
