Iran has created a corridor for massive supplies of ammunition to Russia for the war against Ukraine through the Caspian Sea, the Wall Street Journal reports, citing documents and its own sources.
“According to officials in the Middle East, Russian ships are transporting large quantities of Iranian artillery shells and other munitions through the Caspian Sea to replenish supplies for the fighting in Ukraine,” the American newspaper reported.
It is noted that this “increases the difficulties for the United States and its allies, who are trying to prevent cooperation between Moscow and Tehran.”
“Over the past six months, cargo ships have transported more than 300,000 artillery shells and millions of ammunition from Iran to Russia,” the WSJ claims.
Middle Eastern officials said the last batch of weapons known to have crossed the Caspian Sea to Russia was shipped from Iran in early March on the 140-meter Russian cargo ship Rasul Gamzatov. The ship was carrying 1,000 containers with 2,000 artillery shells, which was not previously reported.
The newspaper notes that information about these cargo operations was allegedly transmitted to the United States.
