Russia will respond in kind to the mass expulsion of its diplomats from Berlin, the Russian Foreign Ministry said today.
“The German authorities have decided on another mass deportation of employees of Russian diplomatic missions in Germany. We categorically condemn these actions of Berlin, which continue to damage the entire spectrum of Russian-German relations,” the ministry said, without naming the number of diplomats being expelled.
Relations between Moscow and Berlin, the biggest buyer of Russian oil and gas, soured after Russia sent troops to invade Ukraine in February 2022 and the West responded with sanctions.
“In response to the hostile actions of Berlin, the Russian side decided to respond in kind by expelling German diplomats from Russia, as well as significantly limiting the maximum number of employees of German diplomatic missions in our country,” the ministry said.
According to the same source, the German ambassador in Moscow was informed of these actions on 5 April.
