On the Telegram messaging app, the former Russian president described the British monarchy as “degenerate” and called the last three prime ministers “very strange creatures”.

Using Kremlin diplomatic language, he concluded his message with the words: “Britain was, is and will be our eternal enemy.”

“At least until their naughty and disgustingly wet island sinks into the abyss of the sea from the wave created by the latest Russian weapons system,” threatened a Russian official.

“Let it be, as the Beatles sang…” Medvedev concluded.
