Sydney is no longer Australia’s most populous city

OUR Melbourne Deal with it Sydney and became its largest city by population Australia – and this is because of the change in its boundaries.

Melbourne’s boundaries have recently been changed to include the suburb of Melton. So with this addition, Melbourne has approx. 5.8 million inhabitantswhich is only 19,000 more than in Sydney.

“More and more people are moving from Sydney to other parts of Australia. On the contrary, more people moved into Melbourne than left the city,” explained Nick Parr, professor of demography at Macquarie University.

Sydney is no longer Australia's most populous city
Melbourne has just 19,000 more residents than Sydney.

“The models show that the population of the two cities will continue to grow,” he adds, noting that immigration is offsetting the low birth rates recorded in both cities.

Liz Allen, a demographer at the Australian National University, explained that Melbourne’s population growth over the past decade has been mostly outflow, but also inflow.

“Melbourne is an attractive area in the recent waves of outward migration to Australia, especially for people from India,” he explained.

Various counting methods

However, some demographers, such as Allen, question this method of counting and insist that the city’s population should only be counted by residents living in the center not in its vicinity. So, by that logic, Sydney remains Australia’s most populous city.

However, Melbourne could take the lead. over the next decade (circa 2031–2032), according to official federal government figures after the 2022 census
