
FBI made an arrest in connection with the leak of secret Pentagon documents.
Earlier, The New York Times reported that the leader of the online group where the secret documents were posted is a member of the Massachusetts Air National Guard. National Guard Jack Teixeira leads Thug Shaker Central, a group of 20-30 people united by a common interest in guns, racist memes and video games.
“FBI agents arrested Teixeira without incident this afternoon,” U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland said, adding that he would soon appear in a Massachusetts court.
Footage broadcast by US television shows heavily armed men escorting a young man in a gray T-shirt and red shorts. The 21-year-old man was arrested in North Dayton, a rural area south of Boston.
Pentagon spokesman Brigadier General Pat Ryder previously called the leak a “deliberate criminal act.”
Some leaked details allegedly related to the military capabilities and shortcomings of Ukraine, as well as information about US alliessuch as Israel, South Korea and Türkiye.
The Department of Justice opened an official preliminary investigation into the case, while The Pentagon assesses the consequences of leaking classified documents.
US President Joe Biden said earlier that investigators were closing in on the source of the leak.
