Florida: ‘ninja assassin’ executed by lethal injection

A Florida prisoner known as the “Ninja Killer” was executed Wednesday for killing a couple on the Palm Coast in 1989. Louis Bernard Gaskin, 56, was pronounced dead at 6:15 pm. (local time) after he was given a lethal injection, according to the office of Gov. Ron DeSandis.

In 1990, the jury recommended a death sentence for Gaskin by an 8-to-4 vote. Florida law now requires jurors to reach a unanimous decision on death sentences.

Both the Florida Supreme Court and the U.S. Supreme Court dismissed Gaskin’s appeals after Ron DeSandis signed his death warrant.

Gaskin was nicknamed the “Ninja Assassin” because he wore ninja clothes during his crimes. After failing to kill another couple in Palm Coast, he also confessed to killing another person three years earlier in 1986.

In the case of the couple’s murders, Gaskin stole a watch, two lamps, and a VCR that were found in his home after the murders. According to investigators, the items were intended for Christmas gifts to his girlfriend.

How many executions happened in Florida?

Gaskin’s execution was the 100th execution in Florida since the state reinstated the death penalty in 1976. In Florida, 297 more people are on death row.

The execution took place six weeks after the execution of Donald Billback, 59, for the murder of 44-year-old Faye Vann in 1990 and three weeks before the scheduled execution of Darryl Barwick for the murder of 24-year-old Rebecca Wendt in 1986.

If there is no reprieve for Barwick, it will be the shortest time since Florida had three executions in 36 days in 2014 under Gov. Rick Scott, also a Republican.
