Taiwan: How Air Force badges make fun of Xi Jinping and delight

Taiwanese are rushing to buy stickers popularized by Air Force pilots that feature a Formosan black bear slapping Winnie the Pooh, a cartoon many in China and the West have compared to President Xi Jinping.

The endangered Formosa black bear is considered a symbol of Taiwanese identity.

The sketch designer told Reuters about a huge increase in orders after the publication of a photo on the hand of an Air Force pilot. β€œI wanted to boost the morale of our soldiers,” said Alec Hsu, owner of the Wings fan store.

The badge features an angry Formosan black bear holding a Taiwan flag and slapping Winnie, with the slogan “Fight!” β€” referring to what pilots have been forced to do more and more over the past three years as China sends more planes to the island’s air defense reconnaissance zone.

β€œWhere can we find one like this! Guaranteed to be a bestseller!” Taiwan’s de facto embassy in the US tweeted on Monday.

Comparisons began in 2013 when Xi visited the US and met his then-colleague Barack Obama, with some commentators finding similarities to the Winnie the Pooh and Tigger characters. Some have speculated that such jokes were the reason for the recall of the Winnie the Pooh movie from China.
