Romania plays as important a role in the war in Ukraine as Poland, according to secret Pentagon documents that have been circulating on the Internet since the beginning of March, writes Spotmedia. Romanian officials consistently refuse to say publicly what the assistance provided to Kyiv by the Romanian authorities consists of.
Top-secret military and intelligence documents that have surfaced online detailing everything from Ukraine’s air defenses to Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency have U.S. officials scrambling to identify the source of the leak, some Western security experts and U.S. officials say , who suspect that it could be someone from the United States, Reuters reports.
The international arena was shaken by the information that came to light after journalists from around the world analyzed documents, including Spotmedia, which show that Romania, together with other NATO states, is conducting data collection, military training and recovery activities. Ukrainian soldiers.
This is the first public information about our country’s participation in hostilities on the border, data that Romanian officials have always tried to hide.
But classified information that has reached the public shows that, in fact, Romania’s contribution to the tactical training, training and rehabilitation of the Ukrainian military is as important as Poland’s.
Romania and Poland, strategic role
In fact, Romania and Poland are key from the point of view of the strategic and combat training of Kyiv’s troops, according to the information of American special services.
According to the secret report of the Pentagon, which got into social networks and was used by Spotmedia, several military operations were carried out on the territory of Romania on March 3, 4 and 5:
- aerial sensitive reconnaissance;
- Bilateral training with partner countries that play a key role in supporting Ukraine;
- Training with partner countries for the military deterrence of Russia.
The operations took place in the following two days as well, which shows that Romania plays a rather strategic role in helping Kyiv, and is not just a donor of weapons and military equipment.
In addition, our country plays an important role in conducting the transfer of equipment from the West, information monitoring of the front and training of soldiers from a neighboring country.
The first secret documents were published on March 1 in a chat room of video game enthusiasts, according to the investigative website Bellingcat.
The pile of classified information has grown since last week, when the New York Times and the Washington Post began publishing information from documents that are actively circulating on social networks and about which it is not yet known how much truth can be found in them.
What is certain is that the US has launched an investigation into the leak of classified documents, particularly those related to Ukraine, which appear to be mostly authentic and pose a “very serious” risk to the national security of the United States. The Pentagon assessed on Monday, reports AFP.
“Some believe that Romania offers too little. What did you give to Ukraine?”
At the end of March, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Romania got into trouble because of the well-known BBC producer Steven Sakur, who pressed Bohdan Aureska to say how Romania was helping Ukraine with weapons.
Sakur insisted that public opinion in Romania is not too enthusiastic about supplying arms to Kyiv, and that some voices in Europe believe that Romania is doing too little in this regard.
“Aurescu is operating through a diplomatic minefield,” said the director of the BBC in the preamble of the interview, who then peppered Aurescu with specific questions about the aid that Bucharest provides to Kyiv.
Although the British director almost cornered Aureska by insisting on finding out how Romania was helping the country occupied by Russia, the head of Romanian diplomacy remained almost faithful to one answer: “I do not comment on this topic.”
The British references to Romanian public opinion refer to the latest Eurobarometer poll, published last Thursday, which shows that Romanians are the Europeans most opposed to EU aid to Ukraine.
Why does Romania not report whether it sent heavy weapons to Ukraine, like all neighboring countries? Answer by Johannis
In the summer of 2022, at the only press conference of President Klaus Iohannis in Kotrochen for the entire previous year, HotNews.ro asked the head of state why Romania does not openly and transparently say whether it sent military aid to Ukraine, because all countries use European law…
President Klaus Iohannis did not want to say directly whether Romania was sending heavy weapons to Ukraine, and only said that during the war, it is unwise to give important information to the enemy. The United States, Great Britain, the Netherlands, France, Italy, Germany, Poland, Slovakia, the Czech Republic or the Baltic States are just some of the countries that have publicly and transparently reported – with the help of lists of quantities, budgets and identification data – what and how much heavy weapons they have sent to Ukraine.
From the Americans, we know exactly how many HIMARS launchers they sent, how many tens of thousands of shells, how many Javelin launchers, etc. From the British and Germans, we clearly know how many tanks, how many armored vehicles… From the Poles, from the Slovaks, from the Baltics – everyone presented lists, numbers, quantities. Romania did not recognize anything…
Then, when asked by HotNews.ro, whether Romania sent heavy weapons to a neighboring country, and if so, what was it and why it was not reported publicly, as in the case of other countries, the head of state answered:
- “I can tell you what I have said on other occasions. We are at war, not in the situation we talk about quietly over coffee.
- The war is right next to us, and it is wise not to give vital information to the enemy.
- We publicly declare that we are helping Ukraine with everything we can, and we are doing that.”
Why this discrepancy between the communication of Romania and our neighbors, who publicly disclosed everything that was sent to Ukraine?
- “This is our approach, because we are direct neighbors of Ukraine and we believe that it is better for us and for Ukraine to help them in this way”
