The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has announced that some 8,500 civilians have been killed since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and many more unconfirmed deaths are feared.
OHCHR noted that from the beginning of the invasion, 24 February 2022, to 9 April 2023, there were 8,490 deaths and 14,244 injured.
However, this UN agency has long called these figures “the tip of the iceberg” because it has limited access to battlefields.
Most of the dead are in Ukrainian government-controlled areas that have come under fire from Russian forces, including 3,972 in Lukansk and Donetsk regions, where heavy fighting is taking place.
“OHCHR assesses that the actual figures are much higher as it receives information with a delay from some areas where severe conflict is raging, while many reports have yet to be verified,” the statement said.
