“IN Aegean Sea there is the issue of islands whose sovereignty has not been determined, there are violations that I have already mentioned,” the foreign minister said in a television interview. Türkiye, Mevlut Cavusoglu, once again calling into question the sovereignty of Greece over the islands of the Aegean.
“There is the question of the airspace they are claiming from 6 to 10 miles, as well as some statements about expanding territorial waters from 6 to 12 miles. All of these issues are matters of controversy that have not been resolved for many years. We must decide how to solve them. Shall we have a personal consultation? In my opinion, we should discuss everything as a whole. Because if we solve one issue, the tension will remain in another,” he said.
“We will appeal to the international court,” he added, setting a condition for an agreement between the two countries. “And we should not be selective, we should apply on all issues. Until we resolve these issues, there will be a positive atmosphere in the interim, but then there will be a violation, then an air battle, there will be tension on the air, and perhaps even an accident. In other words, anything can happen, and this positive atmosphere may soon disappear.”
Disputes with the US remain
Issues on which we cannot agree with the United States have not yet been resolved, Mevlut Cavusoglu later stated.
“If the US wants to act as an honest broker, it needs to be more objective. The F35 program is currently on hold. We have seen management put a lot of effort into the F16. If the US government stands firm, the problems will be solved, but they don’t seem to want to look Congress in the eye. We see it too,” he added.
For Egypt
Referring to bilateral relations with Egypt, Cavusoglu said: “We said that we have started work on appointing ambassadors. After we agreed with Israel on the re-appointment of ambassadors, we decided on the names. We have finally reached this stage. We can announce this during the visit of the Egyptian Foreign Minister to Turkey. We’ll talk when he comes. We were very well received in Egypt. Our visit was extremely positive. Now is the time to slowly take concrete steps.”
