According to a security official, the driver of the car was “tipped over” by the police when he tried to draw his gun. According to the same source, he is an Israeli Arab from the city of Kafr Qasem.
The car turned and drove onto a busy bike path near the beach. In a Reuters video, a white car can be seen overturned on the grass of the park.
The police cordoned off the area from where ambulances arrived to take the injured to the hospital.
Italian Foreign Minister: “Bold Attack”
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tagiani confirmed on Twitter that the victim is Italian, as are those affected by this “daring attack”.
A statement released shortly after by the Italian government emphasized that Prime Minister Georgia Meloni expressed her deep sorrow at the death of Italian Alessandro Parini in a terrorist attack in Tel Aviv. The Prime Minister of Italy, as emphasized in the statement, supports the family of the dead and injured, while expressing his solidarity with the State of Israel.
It was the second fatal attack in hours after two sisters were killed earlier when the car they were traveling in came under fire in the occupied West Bank.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the police to “mobilize all reserve border guards” and the Israeli army “to mobilize additional forces to deal with terrorist attacks.”
