The UN Human Rights Council today voted to extend and expand the mandate of the commission of inquiry into possible war crimes committed Russia after her invasion Ukraine.
Twenty-eight countries voted in favor, 17 abstained and two (China and Eritrea) voted against. Kyiv believes that the Independent International Commission of Inquiry into Ukraine is necessary to hold Russia accountable for its crimes.
With this resolution, the Council asks Russia to allow representatives of international organizations to visit children and other citizens who have been “forcibly displaced” from Ukraine to Moscow-controlled territories. Russia is also called upon to “stop the illegal, forcible movement and movement of civilians and other persons within Ukraine or into the Russian Federation.” Special attention is given to children, including those who are institutionalized, unaccompanied or separated from their families.
