USA: Russia “should not be” a permanent member of the UN Security Council

US Permanent Representative to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield said yesterday Thursday that Russia “should not be” a permanent member of the UN Security Council in an exclusive interview she gave to Agence France-Presse.

“Russia is a permanent member of the Security Council. It shouldn’t be because of what she’s doing in Ukraine, but the charter (of the UN) doesn’t allow changing her status as a permanent member,” Thomas-Greenfield told AFP from Costa Rica, where she attended the conference. Summit for Democracy.

Russia is going to become the chairman of the executive body of the UN from tomorrow, Saturday, for a month, replacing Mozambique.

The American ambassador emphasized that she expected Russia to behave “professionally” as president, although she expressed doubts that she would do so.

“We also expect them to look for opportunities for a further disinformation campaign against Ukraine, the US and all of our allies,” the ambassador in Washington said.

“At every opportunity, we will communicate our concerns about Russia’s actions,” he added, reaffirming Washington’s condemnation of “war crimes and the human rights violations they are committing” in Ukraine.

Thomas-Greenfield stressed that the United States will condemn Russia’s actions and convey to the whole world “what Russia is doing and the consequences of its actions against Ukraine.”

Referring to the diplomatic battle being waged by China and Taiwan to strengthen their diplomatic ties with Latin American countries, Thomas-Greenfield assured that Washington respects the “one China” policy promoted by Beijing, which considers Taiwan part of its territory.

However, the diplomat believes that the US and Taiwan have a “stable partnership” and that they support the rights of citizens with a Taiwanese passport.

Thomas-Greenfield also mentioned the social, economic and political crisis in Haiti and the possibility of international intervention in this country, as the head of EU diplomacy Josep Borrell said a few days ago.

“We are very worried about Haiti. The situation has worsened over the past few months,” she lamented, admitting that she was debating “how to organize an international force that would not come from the UN.”
