Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will chair the UN Security Council meeting in New York in April, as Russia will chair the United Nations on a rotating basis.
“The initiative of the Russian Chairmanship will be to hold a high-level open discussion in the (Security) Council on “effective multilateral cooperation through the defense of the principles of the Charter of the United Nations.” The meeting will be chaired by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told reporters. She added that the head of Russian diplomacy plans to hold a meeting on the Middle East on April 25.
Earlier today, Ukraine called Russia’s upcoming chairmanship of the UN Security Council a “bad joke.” “Russia is usurping its positions, waging a colonial war, its president is a war criminal wanted by the ICC for kidnapping children,” Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said.
On Saturday, Russia will become the chairman of the UN Security Council for a month, replacing Mozambique.
Lavrov’s last visit to the UN headquarters in New York was last September, during the UN General Assembly.
