Spain will deliver six promised Leopard 2A4 tanks to Ukraine after Easter, Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles announced on Wednesday.
“Six battle tanks (…) will be sent to Ukraine after the Catholic Easter week,” that is, starting from April 10, she said in the Chamber of Deputies, according to AFP and Agerpres.
Spain announced the shipment of these tanks at the end of February. These Leopard 2A4 tanks, stored at a military base in Zaragoza (North), had not been used for many years and were in need of repair.
The Spanish army, which trained the Ukrainian military to use these tanks, is currently conducting the final tests of these devices before their delivery, the minister noted.
During his visit to Kyiv, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on February 23 that Madrid could send four more.
“These four additional tanks will have to undergo repairs,” confirmed Margarita Robles, without giving details about the timing of their future shipment to Ukraine.
On Monday, Germany confirmed that it had in turn delivered 18 Leopard 2A6 tanks to Kyiv, which also received British Challenger 2 tanks.
These tanks, long requested by Ukraine, arrive in time for the spring offensive that Kyiv is preparing against the Russian army.
