UK: Jeremy Corbyn expelled as Labor candidate

The decision to “block” the candidacy of the former leader of Labor, Jeremy Corbinin the upcoming parliamentary elections officially received the leadership of the party.

In particular, National Executive Committee of the Labor Party decided – by 22 votes to 12 – to approve Keir Strummer’s proposal to withdraw support for Corbyn’s candidacy.

It is noted that Jeremy Corbyn ceased to belong to the Labor caucus after a dispute arose related to accusations against him of anti-Semitism.

On Monday, the former Labor leader said he was “not going anywhere” and the BBC speculated that Corbyn intended to run as an independent.

In his statements, Corbyn slammed the leadership, saying it “doesn’t respect the party’s democratic foundations”, adding that he joined the Labor Party at the age of 16 because he believed in the need to redistribute wealth and power.

A month earlier, the Labor leadership announced the “withdrawal” of Corbyn’s candidacy. The BBC indicates that the national executive body of the party has the authority to do so.

Corbyn has represented his constituency as an MP since 1983. In 2020 he became independent from Labor but remained an MP.

Labor in the constituency of Islington – that is, in the constituency of Corbin – rejects undue interference by the national executive in the choice of whom they elect as an MP.

It is noted that the Commission accepted Corbyn back into the Labor Party as a member in November 2020, but he was not allowed to represent the party in Parliament again.
