French Foreign Ministry condemns Russia’s intention to develop nuclear weapons in Belarus

France today condemned Russian President Vladimir Putin’s intention to regularly deploy nuclear weapons on Belarusian territory, calling on Moscow to show “responsibility” and reverse its decision, the foreign ministry said in a statement.

“Following Russia’s violation of the INF Treaty, which led to its disappearance, and the announcement of the suspension of Russia’s participation in the START in February last year, this agreement represents an additional element in the erosion of the international architecture of arms control and strategic stability in Europe,” the French Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said. .

In conclusion, Paris calls on Russia to “show the responsibility expected of a nuclear-weapon state and withdraw from this destabilizing agreement.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin said yesterday, Saturday, that Moscow will regularly deploy nuclear weapons on the territory of its ally, Belarus, the country at the gates of the European Union.

Russian officials have repeatedly warned of the use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine if the conflict escalates. Belarus, which has been ruled by Alexander Lukashenko since 1994, borders Ukraine, Poland and Lithuania.
