It is important to keep the lines of communication between Washington and Moscow open after Tuesday’s drone incident, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said at a press conference on Thursday, state news agency TASS reported.
“We think it’s important to keep the lines of communication open, and that’s what we’re doing,” she said, according to CNN.
Zakharova repeated that Russia does not seek confrontation and advocates pragmatic cooperation in the interests of the population of both countries.
“At the same time, we are able to protect these interests,” added Zakharova.
After the incident, Moscow and Washington maintained contact through military and diplomatic channels
American officials and their Russian counterparts are openly at odds over what led to the downing of an American drone over the Black Sea.
The US claimed that Russian fighter jets dropped fuel on the drone before cutting its propeller and forcing it down.
Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said on Wednesday during a telephone conversation with his American counterpart Lloyd Austin that the intensification of espionage operations conducted by the United States is one of the reasons for the incident in the Black Sea between Russian aircraft and an American drone.
The Russians deny there was physical contact between a Russian plane and an American drone, but images released by the Pentagon on Thursday prove Moscow was lying.
