USA: train with potentially dangerous cargo derailed in Arizona

A freight train carrying hazardous materials reportedly derailed in western Arizona Wednesday afternoon, the New York Times reported, citing a spokesman for the Mojave County Sheriff’s Office.

There were no immediate reports of leaks following the crash, which occurred at 19:40. local time (4:40 am Greek time) near the city of Topok, almost on the border with California and Nevada, according to the NYT.

The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and BNSF Railway have been notified and are investigating, according to local broadcaster FOX10. Rescuers and specialists arrived at the scene, but the information remains unclear. However, no casualties have been reported.

According to a statement from the railroad company, early Thursday morning local time, the train was not carrying hazardous materials, but … corn syrup. About eight carriages derailed, but it is not yet known if any material has leaked out.

The scene of the incident, fortunately, is far from residential areas.

The derailment of a Norfolk Southern freight train in February released large amounts of hazardous materials and pollutants into the environment around the East Palestine city of Ohio, sparking a state lawsuit and an NTSB investigation.
