On the night of Thursday to Friday, the Russian army again struck the Zaporizhzhia region and its administrative center of the same name in southern Ukraine, where the largest nuclear power plant in Europe is located, leaving thousands of people without electricity, the newspaper reports. EFE agency quoted by Agerpres.
The attack came late at night, hours after Russia fired more than 80 missiles at more than ten regions of Ukraine, killing about 10 people and knocking out a nuclear power plant from Ukraine’s power grid for several hours.
“Russian terror cynically attacked our city again. As a result of the strikes, critical infrastructure facilities were damaged,” Anatoly Kurtev, secretary of the Zaporizhia City Council, told UNIAN.
According to him, a fire broke out after the attack.
According to preliminary information, two educational institutions were affected. Windows in the buildings were broken, Kurtev added. According to him, after the terrorist attack in Zaporizhia, about 20,000 people were left without electricity. Water and heat supply was also stopped in some areas of the city.
Zaporozhye emergency services raised the alarm
“All the (emergency) services immediately went into action to eliminate the problems. Currently, electricity, heat and water supply in Zaporizhzhia has been partially restored. The works are ongoing,” the municipal official assured.
The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant was completely disconnected from the external power grid on Thursday after massive Russian strikes in the early hours of the morning. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced Thursday evening that the plant had been reconnected to an external power line after 11 hours of emergency operation, relying only on diesel generators.
“Today’s loss of all external power once again demonstrated how fragile and dangerous the situation at the Zaporizhzhia NPP is,” IAEA Director General Raphael Grossi warned, recalling that the plant remains disconnected from external power lines for the sixth time. the beginning of the invasion and occupation of the plant by Russian troops.
He also noted that IAEA inspectors stationed at the station heard “heavy shelling” again, which indicates increased military activity in the region.
The IAEA has been calling for several months to create a safety zone around the nuclear power plant to avoid the risk of a nuclear accident.
