US: Sanctions against Chinese and Iranian drone companies

The US Treasury Department has sanctioned a network of Chinese companies and individuals it says are helping Iran build unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

The network is responsible for selling and supplying thousands of components to the Iranian aircraft manufacturer, the ministry said in a press release.

A particular Iranian manufacturer is said to be involved in the production of a particular model exported from Iran to Russia, according to the same source, and has already been sanctioned in the past for this reason.

Iran, according to the US State Department, “is involved in the deaths of Ukrainian civilians as a result of Russia’s use of Iranian UAVs in Ukraine.”

The sanctions, the press release explains, mean that the resources of companies and individuals included in this list will be frozen, and Americans will be prohibited from doing business with them. Sanctions will make it much more difficult for their targets to engage in any commercial activity at the international level.

The ministry also announced sanctions against 39 financial sector companies that it says have set up a “shadow banking network” that allows Iranian companies to access the international financial system and “hide” transactions.
