Slovakia: Defense Minister calls for MiG-29 fighter jets to be sent to Ukraine

Slovakia must make a decision to send MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine, Defense Minister Yaroslav Nad said today.

“I think it’s time to make a decision,” Nantes wrote in a Facebook post. “People are dying in Ukraine, we can really help them, there is no place for Slovak politics,” he continued.

Nantes noted that he spoke with the Polish Minister of Defense and was informed that Warsaw would agree to a joint process for the supply of MiG-29 fighters to Ukraine.

Western countries that supplied weapons to Ukraine have so far refused to send combat aircraft. Poland has said it intends to send fighter jets as part of a coalition of countries.

Today, the head of the office of the President of Poland, Pavel Srott, told Radio Puls that the number of aircraft will be less than the 14 German-made Leopard 2 tanks that Poland has pledged to supply to Ukraine.

“This will not correspond to the number of Leopards being transported. We will do this in the context of a broader international coalition,” Schrott said.

Slovak Prime Minister Eduard Heger said last month that his country could start negotiations on the supply of aircraft after an official request from Kyiv.

Eger’s government is acting on an interim basis until early elections are held in September, and Nantes has said parliament will be asked to take part in deciding plans to send military aircraft to Ukraine.
