Over 1400 femicides were registered last year Brazil – that is, a woman died every six hours – according to a study published today. President Lula announced measures to end this “unbearable” violence, which reached an all-time high in 2022.

The rise in femicides is “unacceptable,” President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said at a ceremony at the Planalto presidential palace to mark International Women’s Rights Day.

“Today we are presenting a package of measures to end this brutality, but we must go even further in our fight against unacceptable physical violence against women.“, he insisted.

Among other things, an increase in resources allocated to women’s shelters and the resumption of the preventive monitoring program for victims of domestic violence are expected. Lula blames this on her far-right predecessor, Mr. Jair Bolsonarothat he “secretly encouraged violence against women”. Bolsonaro used to make misogynistic remarks, and in 2014 he said of a leftist MP that she was “too ugly” to be raped.

Lula, accompanied by his wife, several ministers and former President Dilma Rousseff (2011–2016), also announced that a bill to end the gender wage gap would soon be submitted to Congress.
