European Justice announced the seizure of assets worth more than 170,000 euros belonging to Italian League MEP Stefania Zampelli and four of her assistants, as part of a fraud investigation.
The four assistants “did not carry out activities related to the function for which they were hired, or only partially performed, and misleading documents about their activities before the European Parliament,” the European Attorney General’s Office (BPGE) said in a statement.
Assistants to the Italian MEP also cheated on their qualifications, “claiming diplomas and professional skills they do not possess,” BPGE reports.
As for the far-right MEP, who is a close relative of at least one of the defendants’ aides, she is suspected of personally benefiting from her aides’ income.
The confiscation of 170,000 euros (bank accounts, luxury cars) carried out on February 23 by the Italian financial police is consistent with the damage assessed by the investigation.
Stefania Zampelli did not respond to an AFP request for comment on the case.
