Algeriahis traditional ally Moscowdecided to reopen its embassy in Kyiv, which had remained closed since invasion Russia in Ukraine a year ago, the Algerian Foreign Ministry announced yesterday Sunday.
This move is aimed at protecting “the interests of the Algerian state in this country, as well as the Algerians living there,” the Foreign Ministry explained.
The opening of the diplomatic delegation, which will be headed by charge d’affaires, will take place “in the near future,” the same source added.
According to Algerian diplomacy, the activities of its embassy in Kyiv “have been suspended due to deteriorating security conditions.”
President Abdelmajid Tabun already announced Algeria’s decision to reopen its embassy in Kyiv on Friday during a live televised press conference.
Mr. Tabun noted that Algerian-Russian relations are “known to everyone”, and he called relations with Ukraine “normal”.
Algeria and Moscow have maintained close relations for decades, starting in the Soviet Union. In 2021, the trade turnover between the two states reached three billion dollars.
The two countries cooperate closely in the military sphere, within the framework of OPEC +, in which 23 oil-producing states participate, as well as in the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF).
