Two Dutch F-35 fighter jets intercepted a group of three Russian military aircraft near Poland and escorted them until they left Polish airspace, the Dutch Defense Ministry said in a press release late Monday.
Initially, the “unidentified” aircraft approached the “Polish NATO area of responsibility from Kaliningrad,” the statement said.
The ministry refers to the Russian enclave in the Baltic Sea between Poland and Lithuania, EU and NATO member states.
“After identification” it was established that it was a Russian Il-20M Kut-A (reconnaissance and reconnaissance aircraft), which was “accompanied” by two Su-27 fighters. “Two Dutch F-35s escorted the group for some distance before handing over the escort to NATO partners.”
The Russian Defense Ministry did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.
The Dutch Ministry of Defense announced that eight Dutch F-35s were deployed to Poland between February and March.
