The United States has urged American citizens to leave Russia immediately because of the war in Ukraine and the risk of arbitrary arrest or persecution by Russian law enforcement agencies, Reuters reports.

“American citizens living in or traveling to Russia should leave immediately,” the US Embassy in Moscow said.

“Be extra careful because of the risk of being illegally detained.”

“Do not go to Russia,” the US Embassy in Russia warned.

The United States has repeatedly asked its citizens to leave Russia. The last such public warning was in September, after President Vladimir Putin ordered a partial mobilization.

“Russian special services arrested US citizens on false charges, selected US citizens in Russia for detention and persecution, denied them fair and transparent treatment, and convicted them in secret courts or without credible evidence,” the embassy said.

“Russian authorities are arbitrarily enforcing local laws against US citizens and have launched dubious criminal investigations against US citizens involved in religious activities.”

Russia has opened a criminal case against a US citizen on suspicion of espionage, the Federal Security Service (FSB) said in January.
