War in Ukraine: the remnants of the S-300 missile and on Moldovan soil

After a supposedly Ukrainian air defense missile fell in Poland in November, killing two civilians, Moldova said on Thursday that shrapnel from an S-300 missile had also landed on its territory, thankfully no one was hurt.

Interior Minister Anna Revenco, Ukraine’s neighbor, told a cabinet meeting that there was still a high risk that Russian missiles would cross Moldovan airspace or “accidentally fall into our territory after being shot down by air defense systems.” For example, according to him, rocket fragments found in a garden near Brichen on January 14 belong to the S-300 air defense system.

“The last case of a shell being detected on the territory of Moldova was on January 14, 2023 in Briceni. As a result of the preliminary investigation, it was established that the discovered parts of the rocket are fragments of the S-300 air defense missile system,” Revenko said, speaking in favor of extending the state of emergency in the country.

The chairman of the Moldovan parliament, Igor Grossu, for his part, said that no matter what the relevant investigation showed, Russia was responsible. “Regardless of the conclusion, any missiles or flights through Moldova are the fault of the Russian Federation, which unleashed a terrible war. The investigation will reveal whether the missile was in the Russian arsenal or in Ukraine’s air defense system. But that doesn’t change much. It is important to note that on February 24, Russia launched a military invasion of an independent state in violation of international law. Ideal. Everything else will be told to you by the prosecution: what got there, where it came from,” Mr. Grosso said.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Moldova, the seized missile warhead contained about 80 kg of explosives.
