2024 Olympics: Latvia threatens boycott

The president of the Latvian Olympic Committee, Jors Tikmers, said that his country would not participate in the Olympics if athletes from Russia and Belarus also took part in it.

“The position of Latvia is that if these games were held now and athletes from Russia and Belarus took part in them, I think that our team would not have gone to these games,” Tikmers said, according to the local newspaper Delfi.

“We hope that the war will end, Ukraine will win and (then) there will be a completely new situation and new rules of the game. In this case, Latvian athletes could participate in the Olympic Games,” he said.

It is noted that the International Olympic Committee said on January 25 that it intends to allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in the 2024 Olympics under a neutral flag, despite the call of President Vladimir Zelensky to exclude them completely.

In response to the International Olympic Committee’s statement, Ukrainian Sports Minister Vadim Gutsayt said that Ukraine could also boycott the Olympics if the plan goes ahead.
