American embassy in Turkey warned Americans today about possible attacks on churches, synagogues and diplomatic missions in Istanbul, in a second similar warning issued within four days of the Koran burning incidents in Europe.
In an updated security alert, the US embassy said “possible imminent retaliatory terrorist attacks” could take place in areas frequented by Westerners, in particular in the Istanbul districts of Beyoglu, Galata, Taksim and Istiklal.
Turkish authorities are investigating, the warning says.
On Friday embassies in Ankara, including embassies USA, Germany, France and Italy, issued security warnings of possible retaliatory attacks on places of worship following separate incidents in Sweden, the Netherlands and Denmark in which Korans were burned.
On Saturday, Turkey also warned its citizens of “possible Islamophobic, xenophobic and racist attacks” in the US and Europe.
