After Germany’s decision to deliver tanks to Ukraine, the leader of the ruling Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) did not rule out direct support of Ukraine with fighter jets, the German agency DPA writes on Sunday, Agerpres reports.
Asked on Sunday whether she was ruling out the delivery of fighter jets, Saskia Esken told ARD station that Germany was not involved in the war and that the government wanted to “avoid it in the future”.
“The decisive factor is that Germany and NATO are not parties to this war,” and the German government is therefore consulting closely with its US counterparts on these issues, said Esken, whose party leads Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s coalition government.
At the same time, it is important for Germany to clearly show Russian President Vladimir Putin by all decisions that “we reject Russian aggression,” she added.
These remarks came after the German government on Wednesday promised Ukraine the supply of 14 Leopard 2 tanks from the Bundeswehr, after a long wait for a similar commitment from the US, DPA reports.
