Sweden: French army orders anti-tank weapons from Saab

Swedish aerospace and defense group Saab today announced an order from the French military for AT4 anti-tank weapons worth 24 million euros.

The French General Equipment Directorate (DGA) placed this order in mid-December for delivery in 2023, Saab said in a statement.

Lightweight, portable and inexpensive, the AT4 is one of the Swedish group’s best-selling weapons in Western armies and one of the most widely used anti-tank weapons. The 84mm rocket is preloaded in a disposable tube.

The order for 4,226 AT4s is for a more advanced version than the one used by the French military, DGA told AFP. AT4s are included in the package of Swedish military assistance to Ukraine.

With a range of hundreds of meters, these weapons can be used against tanks and heavy fighting vehicles, as well as against buildings and fortifications, or to protect installations, Saab said.

Since the beginning of the war, anti-tank weapons have been massively used in Ukraine, mainly NLAW portable missiles, also manufactured by Saab, as well as American-made Javelins.

France, through the manufacturing company MMDA, also produces man-portable anti-tank missiles, the MMP (renamed Akeron) a very expensive model with a range of 4,000 meters.
