Outnumbered Russia is stepping up fighting in eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk region, Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Malyar said on Wednesday, hours after announcing the delivery of Western heavy tanks to Kyiv.

“The fighting is intensifying,” she said on Telegram, referring to the area around Bakhmut, which Moscow forces have been trying to capture for months, as well as the area around Vugledar, a town southwest of Donetsk.

At the same time, the head of the Russian-controlled part of the Donetsk region of Ukraine said on Wednesday that units of the “Wagner” PMC are advancing on the city of Bakhmut, Reuters reports.

In addition, two Ukrainian soldiers fighting in the city of Bakhmut said on Wednesday that they fear the Russians are trying to surround the city.

“The situation in the city is very worrying, but we continue to fight,” said one soldier, who CNN is not naming for security reasons.

A soldier in Bakhmut, who CNN has been in constant contact with for several weeks, said “there is intense street fighting for every house in the east, northeast and southeast,” but said that while the threat continues to grow, he does not believe that in the coming days the Russians will be able to achieve any significant success.
