An anti-vaccination couple who refused to give their child a blood transfusion for life-saving surgery for fear he would be infected, an organization for unvaccinated blood donors: Covid-19 misinformation created the so-called “clean blood” movement.
The movement is spreading conspiracy theories that an unvaccinated person’s blood will be “contaminated” if they are transfused with the blood of a person who has received a Covid vaccine.
These theories are not based “on any scientific evidence,” said Katherine Wallace, an epidemiologist at the University of Illinois at Chicago. “If you transfuse the blood of a vaccinated person to an unvaccinated person, the person being transfused is not vaccinated,” he explained.
But that doesn’t stop internet users from setting up blood banks only for the unvaccinated, something doctors in North America have also asked for.
Recently, a couple in New Zealand refused to let their child have life-saving surgery because they feared he would receive blood vaccinated against FROMovoid
The court temporarily removed custody of the child from his parents so that the operation could take place. But the case has become symbolic among opponents of vaccination.
Such incidents “spread rapidly” on the Internet, “drawing attention to anti-vaccination conspiracy theories,” Wallace said.
In private social media groups, pureblood advocates are calling for violence against healthcare workers administering vaccinations while falsely claiming mass deaths of people vaccinated against Covid.
50 euro registration
Zurich-based Safe Blood Donation is trying to match unvaccinated blood donors with unvaccinated people in need of a blood transfusion.
The organization, founded by Swiss George Della Pietra, says on its website that it finds blood for its clients. He indicates that the company is present in Western Europe, North America, Asia and Africa.
“Many scientists and doctors are very concerned about Covid vaccines, they are convinced that they enter the body through the blood (…) and oppose them,” said Clinton Ohlers, head of Safe Blood Donation. A statement diametrically opposed to scientific evidence.
“The blood of those vaccinated against Covid-19 is safe for transfusion,” said Jessa Merris of the American Red Cross. He added that the components of the vaccine “are not detectable in the blood.”
Safe Blood Donation members are asked to pay €50 to register on the platform and provide a €20 annual subscription. “The pure blood movement is 100% based on misinformation about vaccinesK. Wallace noted.
The pursuit of “purity” is not limited to blood. There are ads on social media breast milk of unvaccinated women or even sperm – “the next bitcoin,” as conspiracy theorists predict.
It’s not easy to estimate the number of people looking for blood from unvaccinated people, but experts say it’s hard to find in countries with high vaccination rates.
