Jordan – Israel: King Abdullah meets Netanyahu in Amman

King Abdullah of Jordan welcomed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Amman today for a rare meeting between the leaders of two neighboring countries whose relations have been strained in recent years.

According to a statement by the Jordanian side, the leaders of the two countries discussed the situation in the Mosque Square in East Jerusalem, since Jordan is the guardian of Muslim shrines in Jerusalem.

King Abdullah stressed that Israel must respect the status of the Al-Aqsa mosque complex in Jerusalem, known to Jews as the Temple Mount.

Netanyahu’s office, for its part, said the meeting dealt with “regional issues” and cooperation between the two countries.
