In a video released by the Ukrainian military a few days ago, it can be seen how a “tank destroyer” was improvised from two Soviet weapons, more than half a century old.
The short shot shows how the T-12 100-mm anti-tank gun was installed on the chassis of the old MT-LB BMP, which entered service with the Soviet Armed Forces in the late 1950s.

Having in the initial version a 30-mm machine gun or a gun of the same caliber as the main armament, the MT-LB today can be used in the role of an armored personnel carrier, and not an infantry fighting vehicle.
As for the T-12 gun, which the Ukrainians now mount on the chassis of an armored vehicle, it was considered revolutionary when it entered Soviet service in 1961, and remained the main anti-tank gun of the Red Army until the late 1980s. .
Ukrainian engineers practically improvised a mobile howitzer, the use of which on the battlefield remains limited. The reason is simple: during combat, the gunner is completely exposed to enemy fire, which, in fact, makes him useless in offensive actions.
But it can be used as a mobile artillery unit to protect camouflaged defensive positions or on forest edges, with the great advantage of mobility as it does not need to be towed by other vehicles to change firing positions.
Interesting improvisations of the Ukrainian military
In the months since the Russian invasion began last year, the Ukrainian military has demonstrated the many improvisations it has used in the fight against the Russian army, from hand grenades modified as cluster munitions to rocket-propelled grenade launchers mounted on the backs of civilians. cars
In one of the most notable of these recordings, Kiev soldiers showed in late November how they managed to destroy an army invasion vehicle with an anti-tank weapon they mounted on the back of a UTV.
Another video they shared on social media in December showed them using M1910 Maxim machine guns, which they linked together to create an anti-aircraft weapon to try to shoot down kamikaze drones launched by the Russians.
Although it is a less impressive improvisation compared to the others presented, it is a new use of machine guns produced over 100 years ago, when Russia was still ruled by the Tsars.
