The Kremlin on Thursday condemned the European Union’s plan to create an international tribunal to investigate the war started by Vladimir Putin, saying it was illegitimate and would be condemned by the Russian side, Interfax reported.

“As for the attempts to create some kind of tribunal, they will not have legitimacy and will not be accepted by us, they will be condemned by us,” Kremlin press secretary Dmytro Peskov said during the daily press conference.

Peskov was also asked what the Kremlin’s response would be to such actions.

“Our investigators are doing very hard and thorough work to uncover all the crimes of the Kyiv regime. This work is carried out every day and almost every hour,” he answered.

“It is very important to add data on crimes committed by the regime to all this information [Ucraina] since 2014 and to which, unfortunately, we do not see any critical reaction from the so-called collective West,” Vladimir Putin’s spokesman also stated.

The EU wants to make Russia pay for its aggressive war against Ukraine

His comments came a day after European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that the EU executive would propose the creation of an international tribunal to investigate Russia’s “crime of aggression”.

“Russia must pay for its terrible crimes, including the crime of aggression against a sovereign state. That is why, although we continue to support the International Criminal Court, we propose to establish a specialized court with the support of the United Nations to investigate and consider the crime of Russian aggression,” she said.

“We are ready to start working with the international community to get the widest possible international support for this specialized court,” she emphasized.

The head of the European Commission also announced that she is proposing a plan to confiscate Russian assets frozen abroad to help rebuild Ukraine.

“We will work on an international agreement with our partners to make this possible. And together we will be able to find a legal way,” von der Leyen said.

Discussions in this sense have been going on for several months, but they have reached a dead end, since in EU countries confiscation of such assets is possible only after a criminal conviction.
